Safety Skills

It is critical that everyone knows CPR and First Aid as well as how to use a fire extinguisher. It is also important that your extinguisher be rated ABC type or better.

To remember how to use a fire extinguisher, remember the PASS acronym.

P- Pull. Pull the locked safety pin from its holder.

A- Aim.  While holding the extinguisher upright, aim the extinguisher at the base of the fire. Be sure to remain 10-12 feet away.

S- Squeeze. Squeeze the trigger of the extinguisher.

S- Sweep. Sweep the extinguisher side to side while extinguishing the fire.

NOTE: This is only effective for small fires (i.e. residential trash cans). If dealing with anything larger or if the extinguisher is not effective, leave the area immediately and go to a safe location. Once out of danger, contact 9-1-1.
